The links on this page provide guidelines on uncharted rocks & reefs, winds & tides where to find fresh water for drinking and swimming, how to tread carefully around pearl farms and cruise boats who already occupy a slice of the ever shrinking cruising area in the Kimberley, and a few tips about stocking up in Broome and visiting the Dampier Peninsula on the western side of King Sound.

Uncharted Rocks & Reefs  -  A number of cruisers and charter boats have come to grief over the past few years on uncharted and incorrectly charted rocks and reefs.  This reef in Yampi Sound is correctly charted and this fishing boat has still managed to clobber it!  The Rocks and Reefs page provides  information on some of these incidents and lists over a dozen dangerous rocks and reefs in areas likely to be traversed by yachts cruising the Kimberley Coast.

Fresh Water - Fresh water is virtually unlimited throughout the Kimberley early in the cruising season.  Water either drops 100m from above, at places such as the King George Falls, or flows from springs such as those found at the Osborne Islands, Swifts Bay and Silver Gull Creek.  The page on Fresh Water supplies gives brief descriptions of each of the many places we have used to top up our water supplies and/or have a safe swim.

Pearl Farms - The Paspaley Pearl Company and Broome Pearls operate the six major pearl farms encountered by cruising yachtsmen on the Kimberley coast.  Many lease areas are in or around well protected, calm anchorages and the lessees may discourage visitors for security reasons and because of the risk of pollution from external sources.  The lease areas are well marked, but it is inadvisable to pass through at night.  The Pearl Farms page provides basic information for yachtsmen approaching and navigating these lease areas.

Dampier Peninsula  -  Cruisers arriving in the Kimberley from the south often get a "baptism of fire" when faced with the task of restocking at Broome  or tackling the severe currents in King Sound.   Check out this page for a few tips on attractions and anchorages around the Dampier Peninsula when cruising north to King Sound and on to the calmer inlets of Yampi Sound.
