THE SIGHTS OF TALBOT BAY TALBOT BAY AIR PHOTO Talbot Bay hosts the Paspaley Pearl Farm, but it is the massive tides and currents that surge through the Horizontal Waterfalls (left) that attract thousands of visitors each year. Large areas of Talbot Bay behind the Horizontal Waterfalls dry at low tide, and the high tide covers many jagged reefs and rockbars. These sights and challenges make Talbot Bay a special place.
Access to Talbot Bay and the Horizontal Waterfalls is either by boat or seaplane. Seaplanes fly up from Derby and Broome, landing either in Cyclone Creek when the tide is high, or on the bay just outside the Horizontal Waterfalls. Floatplanes such as the Cessna Caravan KLP, other fixed wing aircraft and helicopters from charter boats circle over the falls during the peak of the tidal run. We have visited this area by yacht (below), floatplane (above right) and by fixed wing aircraft (right) to take most of the photographs on this page.
Talbot Bay can be entered from the east (Kingfisher Islands), the north (Scaddan Is) or the west (The Canal) then on a southerly course through the unnamed islands. The yachts and charter boats then cruise past Molema Island and Slug Island into the inner part of the bay. There are anchorage areas near the "falls" in the eastern part of the bay and in Cyclone Creek (left).
Although the falls are turbulent and spectacular when seen from the floatplane during the tidal run, there is an hour or so at the top and bottom of the tide when the flow is quite benign. This is the time to go exploring in the dinghy or climbing over the cliffs with some spectacular photos opportunities. (Spot the lady in red in the photo right).
When the tide starts to run again, it is time to retreat to the outer falls and line up the dinghy in the backwater to get photos of the tourists racing through the whitewater. At the end of the day, one has to leave this interesting area and get on with life back in the real world. What better way to depart than to climb aboard the seaplane and take off across the waters of Cyclone Creek at high tide at high speed. For sheer speed and awesome fun, Talbot Bay is definitely the place to spend a few days!
